River Birch, Betula nigra, 4" This deciduous tree reaches 50-90' with a pyramidal habit. Juvenile bark is pinkish, smooth ; mature bark flakes and curls in cinnamon brown to black sheets. Diamond shaped leaves are bright glossy green above and silvery beneath, turning a glowing yellow in fall, before dropping. Conelike fruits stay on tree through winter. This is the most trouble-free birch.
